Intumescent coatings and vapor barriers perform two completely different functions. An intumescent coating is designed to delay fire involvement by expanding when exposed to high temperatures, helping protect the underlying spray polyurethane foam (SPF). A vapor barrier is intended to control moisture diffusion through the building assembly. One does not automatically replace the other.

For example, closed-cell SPF generally has a very low vapor permeance. At sufficient installed thickness, it often serves as the required vapor retarder without an additional membrane. Open-cell SPF, however, remains vapor permeable and frequently requires a separate vapor-retarding material in colder climates or wherever dictated by the project specifications. Applying an intumescent coating over either product does not significantly change those vapor characteristics unless the coating has been specifically tested and listed for that purpose.
Specify Products Based on Their Intended Performance
Trying to make one product perform multiple code functions often creates specification problems. Contractors should instead select products for the role they are intended to perform.
Use the spray foam to achieve the required thermal performance and, where applicable, vapor control. Use an approved intumescent coating to satisfy the required ignition barrier or thermal barrier criteria. If the assembly requires an additional vapor retarder, specify one that has been tested and approved for that application.
