As winter approaches, heating equipment use drives a surge in home fires. NFPA data show that nearly half of U.S. heating-equipment fires occur in December through February, and portable space heaters are involved in 80% of heating-fire deaths. Overall, about 41,000 heating-related fires happen annually (2018–2022), causing roughly 470 deaths.  

In cold weather, these risks multiply: families use stoves, fireplaces and electric heaters, and even small ignition sources can trigger catastrophic blazes in poorly protected buildings. This makes proper fire-resistant insulation critical. Insulation assemblies that carry a 15-minute thermal-barrier rating, whether conventional drywall or advanced coatings, buy vital evacuation time. 

Spray polyurethane foam and wood-framed cavities are especially hazardous without fireproof coverings. Spray foam provides excellent R-value, but it is a combustible plastic that will vigorously burn if exposed. Building codes mandate that foam plastic must be separated from living spaces by a 15-minute thermal barrier (typically ½″ fire-rated gypsum).  

In practice, intumescent coatings like IFTI’s products are engineered as alternative thermal barriers. These coatings swell into a char that insulates the foam or wood behind them. For example, DC315 is tested and approved as a 15‑minute thermal/ignition barrier over SPF. Without such protection, an unsuspecting ignition (even a spark or overheated heater) can flash up through the foam and generate dense toxic smoke.  

In Florida in 2024, firefighters reported that “the chemical spray foam created a thick brown smoke” that endangered crews after the material ignited in an attic. Toxic smoke is the leading killer in fires, and unprotected foam amplifies it. 

By contrast, approved fire-rated assemblies significantly slow flame spread and give occupants crucial time. Intumescent coatings work by expanding into a foamy char under heat. In practice they form an insulating “char barrier” over the combustible substrate. This barrier impedes heat transfer into the foam or wood, slowing the blaze and dramatically delaying flashover.  

When exposed to fire an intumescent coating “creates an insulating char layer that slows the heat transfer” and thus provides crucial extra minutes for occupants to evacuate. Fire-protection research confirms this: passive fire retardant coatings “help prevent fires, minimize damage, and increase life safety by adding valuable time for occupants to safely egress a building”. In short, a thin film of intumescent paint (just a few mils thick) can transform a room of bare foam or wood into a safer structure that resists flame spread.

Both coatings have been tested to ASTM/UL flame-spread and smoke standards, yielding Class A fire performance on wood or foam substrates. By using these coatings (or equivalent approved materials) in winter renovations and new builds, contractors ensure fire-resistant insulation assemblies that slow flame and smoke. Buildings equipped with tested barriers do not immediately burn as fuel; instead, fire containment and escape become far more likely.
